The picturesque small town of Penguin is about half an hour's drive west of Devonport on Tassie's north west coast. It is a pretty seaside resort town which, unsurprisingly, was named by the distinguished botanist Robert Campbell Gunn after the fairy penguins which still inhabit the local coastline. Today it is a combination of a local service centre and a tourist destination.
Sharing a friendly rivalry with nearby Ulverstone, especially in local sporting fixtures, Penguin is rapidly building a reputation as a great holiday destination.
The town of Penguin is famous for its colonies of Fairy Penguins, active from the end of September to the end humour about this particular namesake. Consequently, there is a large penguin at the beachfront park (reputedly the largest penguin in the world), there are penguin garbage bins in the street, and even the Penguin Meals on Wheels has a picture of a penguin on the side of the building. The town and surrounding region has a population of 4500. The district produces a wide range of fruit and vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, and cherries, plus pyrethrum and even poppies...and also has a small but thriving beef cattle industry.
Penguin attracts a growing number of tourists, eager to take in the beauty of the quiet seaside town and region nestled between the coast and the nearby Dial Ranges.
