Situated
in the heart of the North West Coast, Tasmania's
fastest growing region, is the
beautifully named and exquisitely presented town of
Penguin. This seaside gem possesses all the coastal
beauty Tasmania has to offer as well as a friendliness
and community spirit that make people just fall in
love with the place.
One
of the major attractions of the town is the Penguin
Market, which for the last 14 years has showcased
the best of Tasmanian arts and crafts. Now under
new ownership, the Market has more than doubled in
size to incorporate a new produce area, commercial
fashion and giftware stalls, a new fully undercover
emporium, and a fresh food court. The Market is also
experiencing a total refurbishment of the existing
arts and crafts buildings. Penguin Market is
Northern Tasmania's largest market offering over
200 stalls, all under cover, making Penguin Market an
all weather market. It has quality product lines
which include fresh produce, fine Tasmanian woodwork,
jewellery, fashion, giftware, hand made craft, and
homewares. There is also an International food court
which includes pizza &
pasta, espresso bar, wine bar, souvlaki, seafood, Asian,
ice cream bar, juice & health food, and much more! Penguin Market is open every Sunday,
only closed on Christmas day.
While
retaining the arts and crafts essence of the Market,
the need arose to cater to the growing demands of
locals and the increased tourist numbers. While Tasmania
has a reputation worldwide for fine food, often you
still have to search it out, and this was the catalyst
for taking Penguin Market to the next stage.
Not
only is Penguin perfectly positioned halfway between
the big centres of Devonport and Burnie and only
10 minutes from Ulverstone, it is also in the middle
of Tasmania's 'Food Bowl'. The best of Tasmania's
produce can all be found within an hour or two's
drive. The Penguin Market will also be providing
a free shuttle bus service from nearby local towns,
so if you don't have transport, now it doesn't matter!
Details of the free bus service will be advertised
in the new Hub Newspaper, and on the website,
so keep posted. Add to that the fact that we are
only 30 minutes from the tourists arriving in Devonport
on The Spirit of Tasmania ferries, what more could
you ask for?
